Abstract: The unprecedented gold-mediated activation of nitriles is reported. A [(NHC)AuI]-based catalytic system was found to be efficient for the nitrile hydration reaction of a broad spectrum of substrates that includes aromatic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic examples.
